Pre-School Reading Volunteers

St George's Childcare

It is widely known that reading to children and instilling a love of books and stories in children is one of the best ways we can prepare preschool-age children to start school. We’d like to make reading extra special for the children once per week here, by having enthusiastic volunteer ‘Story Time Readers’ come in and read with them. Story Time Readers come in to read a book or two to a small group of children and can sometimes also do an associated game or craft activity with them too.

Detailed Description

Could you volunteer to come in and read books with our pre-schoolers? St George's Childcare is a large nursery and preschool based in Tunbridge Wells (TN4 9LP). We’re looking to recruit a team of Story Time Readers to come in regularly and read with our children aged 2.5 to 5 years old. It is widely known that reading to children and instilling a love of books and stories in children is one of the best ways we can prepare preschool-age children to start school. We’d like to make reading extra special for the children once per week here, by having enthusiastic volunteer ‘Story Time Readers’ come in and read with them. Story Time Readers come in to read a book or two to a small group of children and can sometimes also do an associated activity with them (it could be as simple as doing some colouring of a character from the book, or it may be a game or a craft activity, having fun with the children). We can be flexible on how often you can come in – just let us know your preferences. A DBS check will be performed (we will process and pay for this for you) for all of our regular volunteers following a trial session in which you come in to our setting and see if you like the role and would like to take it up on a permanent basis.

Youth Work

What skills are required for this role

Reading & Writing, Teamwork, Talking To Others, Listening

Why these skills are required

We need people who can read a children's book fluently, confidently, and make it engaging and fun for young children - asking them questions about the book, putting on silly voices, having lots of fun while reading. We want to inspire the children with a love of books and stories.

What is in it for you

Our reading volunteers really enjoy coming into our happy childcare setting and building a relationship with the children, watching them as they develop their listening skills and interest in the stories being read.

Time Commitment

We find that the children can only engage for 30 minutes maximum, so our Reading Volunteers come in for a maximum of 45 minutes usually. This can be weekly, or every other week if preferred.
