Martello Tower 24, Dymchurch - Volunteer Stewards Wanted

Friends of Martello24

Volunteer Stewards meet and greet the visitors, advise them of safety issues, explain the history and workings of the tower and answer questions.

Detailed Description

Martello Towers were built along the Kent coast over 200 years ago to help defend England from the threat of invasion by Napoleon. Tower 24 is one of the very few remaining that is in its original configuration. For example, there is a period cannon on the gun deck. The Tower is owned by English Heritage. A local charity, The Friends of Martello 24, is responsible for opening it to the public. More stewards are needed to help on the days when the Tower is open. Their role is to assist visitors as they make their way around the building. This is done by providing them with information about the history of the Tower, directing them around the site and answering questions. The Tower is open on Saturdays and Bank Holiday afternoons between 2 pm and 4 pm from April and October. With additional stewards we would be able to open on Sundays as well. Stewards can sign up for as many or as few sessions as they wish. One session a month is typical, but some people do more. Training and background information will be provided, and new stewards will always be on duty with an experienced member of the team. Normally at least two stewards are on duty, with more on busy bank holidays. The Tower does have features that make it problematic for people with mobility issues. If you’re interested in being a steward, or would like further information, please get in touch.
