Want to use your social media skills to make a difference to wildlife? Social media is widely used by the public to plan trips out and keep up to date with news, events, and activities. We want to use social media to promote our work and events to RSPB Dungeness nature reserve. Increasingly, people use social media as a way of asking questions before their visit, so you’ll also be helping people plan their brilliant day out. Our social media pages are a key marketing tool and support our work with visitors on the reserve. We want social media volunteers to help keep our online activity up to date and looking great! The main part of this role is about maintaining our online activity and responding to enquiries. You’ll develop, plan and publish posts following the social media calendar, create blog posts for our community page, post pictures, suggest ideas and undertake other marketing activities. You will get to learn about the wider work of the RSPB on a national and regional level, as well as building new relationships with local wildlife interest groups. Main Tasks -Planning, writing and sharing news, events and stories on social media -Planning, writing and sharing blogs and stories on our community page. -Drafting social media posts (for Facebook and Twitter) in friendly and inspiring language for the general public. -Obtaining the correct permissions to share stories, names and photography. -Communicate regularly with the Visitor Experience team and other reserve staff regarding timelines and upcoming news and activities for sharing throughout the year. -Regular Facebook posts and shares. -Regular Twitter posts and retweets. -Monitor comments, messages and notifications and respond when possible on Facebook and Twitter. -Collating feedback from our social media channels and sharing it regularly with the Visitor Experience team. -If time allows, to assist with wider promotion of events on local websites. Key Requirements of the role Essential: -Experience using social media or a willingness to learn more about the platforms we use. -Excellent communication skills, with an ability to adapt writing style. -Experience of running social media pages, including Twitter and Facebook. -Ability to use tact and diplomacy, and accuracy with attention to detail, when sharing stories and news -Computer literate. -Ability to work independently and use own initiative. -Able to make a commitment to several short regular shifts per week, some flexibility may be needed. Beneficial: -Experience of creating your own online content. -Experience of writing copy on behalf of organisations. -A familiarity with the nature reserves and local community. -If you're the kind of person who would like to volunteer but is unable to commit regularly, then this could be perfect for you! This suits a candidate who is looking to volunteer from home and have flexibility in your time commitment. You will be joining a great team working for nature on our East Solent reserves. You will be given full training and support around how to respond to comments and questions on social media. You will need to attend an Induction session as well as Safeguarding training and undertake some essential online training. You will also be able to access a comprehensive learning and development programme. You will be allocated a line manager and will have regular opportunities to discuss your role with this person. You can claim travel expenses (according to RSPB policy) to and from the reserve when you need to attend and will be able to access the RSPB’s Thank you Volunteer Card

This role will require some key general skills, but please note that we will offer full training and induction into this particular area of the business. You may need some experience in the area depending on what it is. IT skills, creating documents, managing spreadsheets. Excellent communication skills for engaging with different audiences, internal and external to the RSPB. Organisational skills.

Time Commitment

This is a flexible volunteer role and can be done from home. Ideally we would like someone to come in once a week to get a feel of the reserve and to gain inspiration for any blogs or social media material.

RSPB Dungeness, Boulderwall Farm, Dungeness Road, Lydd, Kent, TN29 9PN

By road One mile out of Lydd on the Dungeness Road turn right for the main site. The visitor centre and car park are one mile along the entrance track. By train Rye station is 10 miles (16 km) from the reserve. You can then take the bus 100 to Lydd, and bus 11/11A/11B (not Sundays) from Lydd to the reserve. Ashford station is 16 miles (25 km) from the reserve. You can use bus service 11/11A/11B (not Sundays) to reserve. Folkestone station is 20 miles (32 km) from the reserve. You can use bus service 101 to Lydd and bus 11/11A/11B (not Sundays) from Lydd to reserve. By bus Bus services 11/11A/11B from Ashford via Lydd (not Sundays) stop on request at the reserve entrance from where there is a one-mile walk to the Visitor Centre. There is a limited service on bus 102 from Lydd or Folkestone. The nearest stops on Sundays are at either Lydd or Lydd-on-Sea (The Pilot Inn).
