Royal Engineers Museum

Working in a small team that will undertake basic conservation and generally care for the display, safety and security of the Museum’s static military vehicle and large equipment collection. Including armoured vehicles, bridges, hutting and searchlights, the collection requires constant cleaning, dusting and monitoring for safety and security.

Working in a small team that will undertake basic conservation and generally care for the display, safety and security of the Museum’s static military vehicle and large equipment collection. Including armoured vehicles, bridges, hutting and searchlights, the collection requires constant cleaning, dusting and monitoring for safety and security. The majority of work will be undertaken in the public areas of the Museum and awareness of safe working methods are important as well as a willingness to engage with our visitors should they be curious about the vehicle or your work on it. Key Responsibilities: • Routine cleaning of the vehicle and large equipment collection displayed and stored the main Museum site and held in Slip 3, Chatham Historic Dockyard. • Undertake basic maintenance tasks to ensure that the vehicles are safely and securely displayed and noting that the Museum does not aim to restore its vehicles to running condition. • Maintain records of work undertaken on the vehicles and large equipment collection. • Work alongside Royal Engineer works parties undertaking basic vehicle maintenance as part of the RE Museum Vehicle Sponsorship Programme. • Support vehicle and large equipment collection audits when undertaken by the Collections Team. • Support the installation of new displays of the vehicle and large equipment collection when necessary. • Become familiar with the history and operation of the items in the vehicle and large equipment collection and engage with Museum visitors when working on them in the galleries. This role would suit someone • Who is practical, not afraid to get their hands dirty, and comfortable working at heights • Who is able to work as part of a team • Comfortable engaging with the public whilst working • Able to comply with safe working methods • Interested in vehicles and especially military vehicles.

Experience: No experience is necessary but the following would be an advantage: • Basic awareness of Museum housekeeping and cleaning techniques.

Time Commitment

Minimum of 1/2 a day a week.
