Role Detail

Margate Sea Cadets - Fundraiser

Margate Sea Cadets

Fundraisers required. No experience necessary although this will help; you can also use this opportunity to enhance your skills in preparation for other job applications. Fundraising can be primarily via online applications or arranging and helping at events and we can use as many people as wish to help!

Detailed Description

The role is to support the Unit Management Trust (UMT) by fund raising for Margate Sea Cadets. Being a registered charity, we have to fund premises and utility costs, as well as the provision of equipment such as boats and helping Cadets access courses and other events. There are many different ways of fundraising and we would be happy for anyone to bring any experience they may have with this. If you do not have experience but are looking for it, perhaps to help you with future job applications, we would still be delighted for you to 'learn on the job'. You can work any hours that suit you - the only thing we ask is that you are committed to whatever it is you agree to. Much of the work would be from your own home, although you could come into the Unit at Hartsdown Park on Parade evenings (Tuesdays and Thursdays) to meet the Cadets and work from there. You would work closely with the Chair of the UMT and the other UMT members, as well as the uniformed staff - who are all volunteers and who train the Cadets in a variety of skills to obtain their various badges and progress through the ranks. Margate's Sea Cadets have been in existence for 100 years and we are looking to rebuild the Unit following the impact of the pandemic, especially on local children and young people. Further details about the Sea Cadets generally can be found here: https://www.sea-cadets.org/

What skills are required for this role

Basic IT skills - internet & email, Organising & Planning, Teamwork, Research

Why these skills are required

There are two main sets of skills, which one person could have, or which could be split between more than one person. One primary method of fundraising is by researching for funding opportunities and submitting applications. The skills here would be more IT based. The other main method is by organising events such as fairs, boot sales, bag packing etc. In these cases the skills are more likely to involve liaising with, and organising, a variety of people. There is also an option of 'cold calling' - although rather then asking for money, perhaps asking for contributions of items such as art or boating equipment for use by the Cadets.

What is in it for you

Depending on the applicant's own circumstances, the roles can be used to enhance your own skills, perhaps in preparation for other paid job applications. If however the applicant has some time spare and would want to help some of Thanet's young people, the roles would clearly be of direct benefit to both the applicant and the Cadets and anyone would be able to see the positive impact that the fund raising would have.
