Detailed Description

Fan Bay Deep Shelter is one of our newest and most unique places to visit, located deep within the White Cliffs of Dover. The shelter was built during the Second World War as accommodation and protection for the men serving at the gun battery above. Forgotten for almost a century, the tunnels have been left as they were when abandoned in the 1950s. We are looking for volunteers for the following: meeting groups at the tunnel entrance, checking their tickets and helping make sure that tours leave on time; chatting to people and introducing the story of the tunnels while they're waiting, keeping their attention and making sure their visit gets off to a great start; getting people ready for their tour, giving them hard hats and torches; learning and sharing ideas with volunteers, particularly the tour guide team. You will be important in making sure things run as smoothly and safely as possible - this includes getting to know health and safety and evacuation procedures. There might occasionally be some other activities that are of interest to you. ; Volunteers who can offer a minimum of 50 hours a year will receive free National Trust membership, and a 20% discount on National Trust sales, catering and holiday cottages.
